SMB / NFS

Problem

Several machines need to work with the same files using normal filesystem operations. The files physically live on another machine.

Solution — Network File System Protocols

Protocols such as SMB and NFS expose remote files over a network.
Client
  ↓ network
File Server
  ↓
shared files
Core idea: SMB/NFS make remote shared storage accessible through file-oriented semantics.
