ICMP

Problem

IP can attempt to deliver a packet. But what if: * the destination can't be reached? * a router can't forward it? * its lifetime expires? The sender needs some way to receive network-level information.

Solution — ICMP

ICMP stands for Internet Control Message Protocol. Networks send control messages such as: Destination Unreachable Time Exceeded Tools such as ping also use ICMP messages to test reachability.
Core idea: ICMP lets IP networks communicate errors and diagnostic information.
